Are you an aspiring filmmaker or photographer who likes fun? Yeah, we thought so.
On Friday, Aug. 7 at 5:30 p.m., bring your filmmaking crew (a.k.a. your friends and family) and a $50 entry fee to Welcome Diner for a fun and zany filmmaking challenge. Over the weekend, 20 contestants will craft and edit three-minute shorts for Dinerwood Round 3 — 2015 Welcome Diner Film Fest.
The submissions run the gamut in genre and style but one mandatory prop and one line of dialogue, which you’ll receive the day of the competition, must be used somewhere in the video. If you have a wild and endless imagination, this challenge is right up your alley. The deadline for submissions is Sunday, Aug. 9 at 5:30 p.m.
After the shorts are submitted, the competition culminates in a community watch party Aug. 13 starting with the Pabst Blue Ribbon (PBR) preshow at 6 p.m., followed by the screenings at 8:30 p.m. Winners are announced at 10 p.m. with $1 PBR tall cans and PBR swag giveaways all night long.
Proceeds go toward an award for the best film and a portion is donated to the Garfield Community Garden. There’s also a people’s choice award for the die-hard critics. In 2014, the Dinerwood Best Film winner took home $440 in cash and other awesome prizes.
Since its inception in 2013, Dinerwood has grown into a massive community event merging art, creativity, great food, and of course, frosty beverages. Limited space is available for the Dinerwood watch party, so get there early if you want to attend.
This year’s judges include Downtown Phoenix Inc.’s own Sara Anderson, Wayne Rainey of The Monorchid, Katie Ann Franklin of the Phoenix Youth Hostel and Cultural Center and Casey Johnson of Welcome Chicken + Donuts.
Welcome Diner is located in the heart of the Garfield Historic District at 924 E. Roosevelt Street. Current hours are Tuesday-Sunday from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. For more information, email the folks at Welcome Diner hey@welcomediner.net or call 602-495-1111.
