The N. Porter Saddle and Harness Company was famous for Western wear and saddles that lasted a lifetime. Until 1947 when it became famous for something else: Arizona’s first escalator!⁠

The business was founded in Texas in 1875 and relocated to Phoenix in 1891. Porters changed addresses as the city grew and, by 1940, was located at the northwest corner of First and Adams streets.⁠

It’s a foundation his grandmother laid in October 1964 when she opened Mrs. White’s Golden Rule Café just east of downtown in the historic Eastlake Park neighborhood.
