Celebrate Black History Month at one of Phoenix's only remaining Black Historic Landmarks, the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center. Visit their new photography exhibit, "The Black Folk Photography of Joe Schwartz," and observe "strong-willed people living in dignity...struggling for survival against tough and miserable odds." "I always identified with America's have-nots, women, children, immigrants, and minorities," Schwartz wrote in the introduction to his 2000 book, "Folk Photography: Poems I've Never Written." Schwartz's 2002 book is the inspiration of Carver's new exhibit, which "illustrates and circulates the love of humanity," which became his "mission" and "driving force." Schwartz always depicted his subjects with dignity, particularly African Americans, and this is why we pause this Black History Month to let his photographic art, like that of Black folk photographic artists such as Deana Lawson, Gordon Parks, and James Van Der Zee, reveals the fortitude, resilience and joy embedded in Black history and life. "The Black Folk Art of Joe Schwartz" is sponsored, in part, by support from the Compass CBS Foundation and Diamond Strategies, LLC. $12.
