Tangela Smith of the Phoenix MercuryAs the 2009 Phoenix Mercury season begins, hopes are high that the team will return to championship status—and a 8-4 start is a good way to get the ball rolling. Returning eight starters and a rookie phenomenon in DeWanna Bonner, the chemistry is obvious. The bond and sisterhood they have makes them successful on and off the court, leaving their destiny in arm’s reach. With three players averaging double digits in scoring and two others with nine points a game, the Mercury will surely stay on the winning side of the conference.
And here’s two of the Mercury’s best: 12-year veteran Tangela Smith, the center from Iowa; and rookie sensation guard/forward DeWanna Bonner from Auburn. Did you know that Tangela Smith is third all time in games played, fourth all time in field goals and seventh in points and rebounds? Her numbers alone are Hall of Fame worthy. And then there’s the fact that she has won four championships (in Korea, Turkey, China and Phoenix). We might have the best player ever in women’s basketball right here in Downtown Phoenix in Tangela Smith.
And now DeWanna Bonner. Did you know this rookie guard/forward is averaging 16 points and 11 rebounds in 26 minutes off the bench? Pretty big numbers from the 21-year-old. One of her teammates was quoted as saying that she is a “young Kevin Garnett.” With all that passion and talent, I see a lot of years of Bonner domination ahead.
As this championship run begins, there would be no better time than now to jump on board for this emotional rollercoaster we call basketball. It will be a magical ride and I will be there for every stop. Hope you’re there with me.
