Corn Bag at the Pop Up Park

Corn Bag at the Pop Up Park

Ah, March, that glorious time of year for orange blossoms, spring training, March Madness and, uh, Corn Bag.
Once the staple of Midwestern backyard barbecues, Corn Bag – also known as Corn Hole, Corn Toss, Bean Bag Toss, Bag Toss and, simply, Bags – is sliding its way out of obscurity, across the national stage and right into Downtown Phoenix.
As it turns out, the game of tossing bags filled with grain into a hole on a ramp isn’t just for family picnics or hipsters anymore. Don’t believe us?  Three events Downtown are out to prove that Corn Bag just hit the big time.
This Friday marks the start of the Downtown Phoenix March Cornbag Madness at the lunchtime Pop Up Park or Friday Happy Hour at CityScape. This three week long tournament will pit company against company in a double elimination tournament on the road to the Corn Bag Final Four before crowning a Downtown champ March 23rd.  So, loosen up your tie, warm up your pitching arm and write your own Cinderella story. The winners will not only get a prize but also a chance to play in Arizona’s largest semi-competitive tournament, the CornbagCup.
Saturday, March 10th brings the Doug and Wolf’s 2nd Annual Cornhole Cup back to CityScape. This mega event will transform Central Avenue into a grassy park for the 128 teams battling it out for over $3,000 in prizes. Come dressed in costume (there’s a $1,000 prize for the best), ready to pitch your way to the top or just to watch your buddies toss bean bags around in an attempt at glory. The best part? It’s all for charity – proceeds go to the Scottsdale Healthcare Prostate Fund.  For more information visit ktar.net/cornholecup.
The month of Corn Bag Madness concludes on March 24th with the CornbagCup Tournament at CityScape.  Just in time for the big NCAA games at US Airways Center, 60+ teams will duke it out with Solo cup in hand in search of their own “One Shining Moment.” The Western themed event features free beer and pizza for the players, a cash bar by Copper Blues for the spectators and, for $15, fans can drink unlimited Miller Lites until 5 pm. Of course, this wouldn’t be Corn Bag without prizes for the best costume, best team name and the top team. Come by before the West Regional semifinal games to watch the bean bags fly across Central Avenue or hit up the after party at Copper Blues, which runs from 5 – 8 pm.
