If you see purple lights shining on City Hall, purple posters or banners hanging around Downtown Phoenix — it’s to signify Domestic Violence Awareness Month. “Paint Phoenix Purple” is a local awareness campaign brought to you by the City of Phoenix in collaboration with more than 50 community, private and public organizations.

Domestic violence is one of the most widespread and dangerous health and safety challenges in Phoenix today, according to a report by the City. Statistically, one in four women will experience domestic violence and one in five teens will be the victim of dating abuse. Someone dies every three days from a domestic violence incident in Arizona. For the thousands of children who witness domestic violence, they are statistically more likely to drop out of school, abuse alcohol and drugs, and go on to perpetuate the cycle of violence in their own lives.

Displaying purple throughout the community during the month of October expresses the shared message that there is no place for domestic violence in our community’s homes, neighborhoods, schools or workplaces. The City’s Paint Phoenix Purple campaign has made significant strides since launching in 2013 by educating and providing resources to thousands of people.
