The second annual Pedal to the Metal: Bike Art show rolls into Downtown Phoenix on Saturday, March 16 from 5-7 p.m. combining three things downtowners love: bicycles, art and community building.
The one-night event features a bicycle-themed art show featuring 16 local artists, live music, and a group ride to the event.
Held during Artlink Phoenix’s Art Detour 31 weekend, Pedal to the Metal: Bike Art Show celebrates downtown’s growing bicycle culture while showcasing original bicycle-inspired artworks by local artists.
From screen printing and mixed media, video, water color and more — Pedal to the Metal features artworks as diverse as the artists themselves. Exhibiting artists include Fernando Barajas, Andrew Brown, Clyde, Kenosha Drucker, Lalo Cota, Lauren Lee, Airi Katsuta and many more. Local musicians, Jet Dispo and Lacour Lavante, will come together for one night as “Black Tiger” to provide a soundscape for the show.
Hosted by Downtown Phoenix Inc. and curated by local art studios/space Megaphone PHX, the community event kicks off with a group bike ride from Bicycle Nomad Cafe ending at the Downtown Phoenix Inc. headquarters for the art show.
And while art show in an office space may be a little unlikely, it’s actually one of the event’s strengths.
“It’s really neat to inject quality artists into a space that’s not necessarily designed for art,” said show curator Andy Brown of Megaphone PHX. “It makes it an interesting place to for a show.”
In true urban style, guests are encouraged to ride bikes to the event (there will be plenty of bike racks), or walk, light rail or use ride share.
