Janet Echelman's vortex-like net was inspired by Arizona's distinctive monsoon clouds, and saguaro flowers and saguaro boots (which form inside Arizona's iconic cactus and are often used as nests by birds). The sculpture sits 38 feet above the park plaza, rising to an overall height of more than 100 feet. The largest ring holding the net aloft is about 100 feet wide. The artist's work involved the collaborative talents of an international team of 150 designers, engineers, fabricators and lighting specialists. The polyester net was produced with a combination of traditional hand-baited and machine-loomed knotting. Specialized lighting gives the sculpture an extraordinary glow at night." This piece is part of the City of Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture’s Public Art Program.
