The Valley of the Sun Juneteenth Celebration has been a tradition in Phoenix for over 20 years. Considered the oldest Black American holiday, annual celebrations go back to 1866 in many U.S. regions as some Black communities countrywide have long observed the holiday, which gets its name from two words combining the words — “June” and “nineteenth.” Juneteenth is the oldest celebration of the end of slavery in the U.S.
