Bobby Hutcherson (1941–2016) was one of a small group of vibraphonists most responsible for shaping the sound of the instrument in the 1960s—a legacy that continued for decades after. Though perhaps less known than Lionel Hampton, Milt Jackson, or Gary Burton, his influence on post-bop, fusion, and avant-garde jazz remains strongly felt in his compositions, performances, and work as a bandleader.
His catalog includes a long run as a Blue Note artist—as both leader and sideman. He appeared on Eric Dolphy's Out to Lunch (1964) and led his own sessions including Components (1965), Stick-Up! (1966), and Montara (1975). Around the same time, he co-led a quintet with saxophonist Harold Land, with San Francisco (1971) standing as a highlight of their work together. Beyond his playing—which he expanded to include extensive use of the marimba—Hutcherson distinguished himself as a gifted composer, with much of his most celebrated work drawn from his own pen.
