One of the most beloved Chicano-rooted dance parties in Phoenix is back. FUNK VS CUMBIA returns for a night of vinyl DJ sets, lowrider and vaquero aesthetics, and nostalgic beats that bring generations together on one dance floor. More than just a name, Funk vs Cumbia is a full-spectrum celebration of the sounds that shaped our childhoods. Unlike other “old school” nights, this party doesn’t just nod to Spanish music, it centers it. It’s a party built around the duality of growing up Mexican American. From the family carne asadas to late-night house parties. From cumbias and norteñas to synth-heavy 80s funk and 90s hip hop, DJs from Vinyl Vagos and Phoenix Funkeros spin alternating 30-minute sets of “Cumbia” and “Funk,” mixing in everything from quebraditas, freestyle, and rancheras to Rick James, Fito Olivares, and Madonna.
