Community Leaders to Know: Councilman Kevin Robinson

Councilman Kevin Robinson was elected to the Phoenix City Council representing District 6, which includes the Ahwatukee, Arcadia, Biltmore, and North Central neighborhoods. He was sworn in on Monday, April 17, 2023.

How has your lifelong commitment to public service shaped the way you lead and advocate for community trust and safety in Downtown Phoenix?

As someone who has spent more than four decades serving Phoenix, from the start of my career as an officer to my role today on the City Council I have learned that trust and safety are created through presence and consistency. My focus has and always will be to ensure that people feel heard and that means working closely with residents and businesses to continue to serve the community’s needs.

As both a councilmember and an educator, what role do you believe Downtown Phoenix plays in inspiring civic engagement and leadership across generations?

Downtown Phoenix acts as the hub for people to experience civic life, whether that’s going to a Suns game or engaging with local government, there are ample opportunities downtown. I see firsthand how exposure to civic institutions and community leadership can inspire the youth to get involved, and this accessibility is crucial in shaping the future of Phoenix.

During Black History Month, how can city leadership and Downtown Phoenix communities work together to honor Black history while building a more equitable future?

City leadership can honor Black History Month by listening to community voices, investing in programs, and engaging in honest and difficult conversations that push us forward. Downtown Phoenix plays a crucial role in bringing people together for progress and celebration.
