CAN I KICK IT? Makes Its Debut in Downtown Phoenix for Black History Month
Downtown Phoenix Inc. is excited to present a brand new community-centric event to the public called CAN I KICK IT? that will include a movie and music in the park, shopping local, family-friendly activities, and more in honor of Black History Month on Saturday, Feb. 17, from 3 to 8 p.m. at Civic Space Park.
The event will be hosted in partnership with Shaolin Jazz, a creative event production duo from Washington, D.C. The duo has become known across the United States for hosting this event series in urban public spaces, which includes a screening of a popular action-packed movie with a soundtrack scored live by a DJ with a blend of hip hop, funk, soul, and rock music. This time, attendees can enjoy a free screening of Marvel Studios’ Black Panther.
In addition to the movie entertainment, Archwood Exchange will host its Buy Black Marketplace, featuring over 20 local vendors with various food and retail options. The Buy Black Marketplace has become a fixture in the Downtown Phoenix community. The organization has served as an incubator and resource hub for many small businesses, stemming from its monthly vending series. Along with the opportunity to shop local, attendees can participate in trivia, hop in on a Double Dutch competition, and win prizes in a cosplay costume contest.
The event will be hosted for free at Civic Space Park to coincide with Downtown Phoenix Inc.’s mission of providing inclusive, accessible events to the Downtown community. “It’s our goal to continue seeking new opportunities for connection, creativity, and diversity,” said R.J. Price, Chief Growth Officer at Downtown Phoenix Inc. “We believe this event embraces those values and plants the seed for more events like this one in our community.”
